Use emojis in your ten-frame

Let's look at some ways 10f.io can help you support your beginning mathematicians as they move from concrete to abstract representations. Consider this story problem: "There are 6 ducks and 5 swans in the pond. How many birds are there altogether?"

We could visualize this as a picture and draw ducks and swans on a pond:

Drawing of 6 ducks and 5 swans in a pond

We could represent this with dots in a ten-frame. Changing the dots' colors gives us a nice way to remember these dots represent ducks (green) and swans (white). Notice how we added the color codes to the URL.

From dots to emojis

10f.io also allows us to put emojis in your ten-frame. This allows for an intermediate step between our picture of a pond and the dots. For this, we're going to use emoji codes instead of the single-letter color codes. Similar to other apps, we can specify an emoji by surrounding its name with colons like :this:

Let's show them in separate frames first:

6:duck:

5:swan:

Now let's put them together:

6:duck:+5:swan:

What emojis are available?

By default, we use the latest version of OpenMoji. The complete set of emojis can be searched or browsed from the OpenMoji website. You can also easily download SVG and PNG images of the emojis if you want to use them outside of a ten-frame.

Supporters can choose between emoji styles

OpenMoji emojis will always be available to all 10f.io users. By supporting 10f.io, you can choose between multiple emoji styles. Currently, supporters can use OpenMoji or Twemoji (Twitter).
